A natural high water table and a natural lake exist in the land assigned for the expansion of Abu Dhabi International Airport. The area of the lake has increased dramatically in size in recent times, thus hindering expansion efforts and occupying valuable land. Several solutions were proposed to mitigate the effect of this lake and possibly re-use it for storage of stormwater.

In collaboration with Abu Dhabi Airports Company, an entirely new concept was developed. This involved design of an independent stormwater network and drainage of the lake to historic levels through the developed stormwater network. The new concept would save significant financial resources initially allocated for creation of detention storage facilities and backfilling the remainder land.
